Ever since I was a little girl, I have had a collection of pets that I simply adored. Now, my kids are the ones with the animal friends that they adore. Each of these pets must be seen by a vet at some point, so it was important that I find a vet that would provide care for all of their little friends. It was difficult to find just what I was looking for in a vet, but eventually, I did. My site is filled with advice for helping you find the perfect vet for the animal members of your family.

Introducing A Cat To Its New Home

If you have decided to take on the responsibility of getting a cat as a pet, you will soon be enjoying a faithful companion who will give you many years of joy. To keep a cat happy and healthy, there are several small steps to take in the beginning days when it is brought into your household. Here are some instructions to follow when introducing your cat to its new family and home.

Coming Into The Home

When you pick up your new pet, bring along a cat carrier so your new pet is kept safely housed during its ride to your home. Cats will feel more secure inside a carrier and there is less chance of injury occurring while you are mobile.

Bring the carrier into a smaller room of your home where you intend to keep your new pet for a day or two while they get used to their surroundings. Make sure this room has a door that can be closed so your cat does not get lost in your home while you sleep.

Open the cat carrier and allow your new pet to explore the room. They will most likely walk around smelling each item while cautiously walking around at a slow pace. Speak to your cat in a soft tone while it explores. Allow it to explore while you are in the room for an hour or so and then leave so it can rest, eat or explore on its own for a bit.

Getting Used To Owners

Go to your cat a few times during the first day so it will get used to your voice. If your cat is not afraid, try to pet it so it gets used to your touch as well. When your cat appears comfortable with you, it can start being introduced to a few other family members. Have them come in one at a time so the cat does not get overwhelmed. They can offer a cat treat or try to get the cat to play with a toy to help the cat gain trust.

Introducing To The Home

After a few days, open the door to the room and allow your cat to discover the opening on its own. It will peek its head out and slowly walk toward other areas in your home. Follow your cat as it explores so it feels comfortable hearing your voice as it checks out the surroundings. It is best to limit this exploration to a room or two the first day so it knows how to get back to the "safe" area where it had stayed for the first few days.

Within a week or so, your new cat will be walking around your entire home with ease. Allowing the introductions to rooms and new family members to be done slowly will eliminate unnecessary fear in the cat and will allow you not be worried about trying to get it to come out from underneath a bed or behind a dresser.
